Arabian oryx occurred historically in areas bordering the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) in northern parts of Hadhramaut and Mahra Governorates. Three oryx captured in Wadi Mitan in the easternmost part of the country in 1962 formed the nucleus of the original World Herd.
