Our Story

1999

UAE organized the International Abu Dhabi Conference for the Arabian Oryx. Onne of the important outcomes of this conference was a recommendation to establish a Coordination Committee for the Conservation of the Arabian Oryx (CCCAO).

2000

The Founding conference of the CCCAO was held in Oman.

2001

The second CCCAO meeting was held in the UAE. This meeting authorize the establishment of a General Secretarial for the Conservation of the Arabian Oryx to act as an operational entity for the CCCAO. It was decided that the headquarter of the General Secretariate would be based in the UAE at the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi.

2007

The third meeting of the CCCAO was held in Wadi Rum Protected Area of Jordan. One of the important outcomes of this meeting was a recommendation to formulate a regional strategy for the Conservation of the Arabian Oryx. In August of the same year the General Secretariat of the CCCAO organized a regional workshop to prepare this strategy, which was officially published in 2010.

2010

The CCCAO held its fourth meeting in Syria. The key outcomes of this meeting included requesting each member states to provide the General Secretariat with the names of two representatives to act as national coordinators with the General Secretariat. Conducting a regional workshop on the veterinary aspects of Arabian Oryx management was another recommendation of the Syria meeting.

2011

A first regional disease survey was circulated to Arabian Oryx collections in the range states.

2013

A second regional disease survey was circulated to Arabian Oryx collections in the range states.

2014

The results of the 2013 regional disease survey were gathered and the report was completed. A workshop on priority issues was held amongst animal management experts and veterinaries in the UAE, four priority areas were identified. During this year, the Arabian Oryx website www.arabianoryx.org was launched.

2015

The Fifth Meeting of the coordinating committee for the conservation of the Arabian Oryx was held in May in Abu Dhabi, UAE. A National Report Template was developed and proposed, as well as a five year workplan. The 2013 Middle East Disease Survey report was published.

2016

GSCAO held a National Workshop on Standardizing Herd Management Practices of Arabian Oryx Collections in UAE. The workshop was generously hosted by the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD). The workshop participants recommended the establishment of a working group for developing technical guidelines on herd management practices for Arabian Oryx collections in the UAE.

2017

A three-day technical workshop (9-11 October) focusing on Arabian Oryx records keeping was organized by GSCAO in partnership with Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Al Bustan Zoological Centre (ABZ). Workshop participants were provided with basic user training on the Zoological information management system (ZIMS) a common animal record system developed by Species360 that is currently used by more than 1090 zoological institution worldwide.

2018

GSCAO in collaboration with the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Saudi Wildlife Authority (SWA) organized a two-day workshop (13-14 March) on Genetic Management of Arabian Oryx collections in the range states. The workshop was held in Taif city of Saudi Arabia. The 6th Meeting of the coordination committee for the conservation of the Arabian Oryx (CCCAO) was held on 18th December in Abu Dhabi. The meeting was attended by representatives of range states.

2019

GSCAO published the 4th edition of the Middle East Arabian Oryx survey report.

2020

GSCAO in collaboration with Environment Agency- Abu Dhabi (EAD) organized a virtual webinar on Education and outreach programmes of Arabian Oryx Conservation institutions in the United Arab Emirates: Successes and future priorities.

2021

GSCAO organized a virtual webinar on Health Management of Arabian Oryx Collections in the UAE.
