Arabian oryx formerly occurred in the deserts of the western UAE. The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, former President of the UAE, found a valuable breeding herd of oryx in Abu Dhabi that has furnished stock for reintroductions. Currently, two reintroductions of Arabian oryx in the UAE are well documented including the Arabian oryx release in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve and the Arabian oryx reintroduction in the Abu Dhabi Emirate. There are other oryx breeding herds in the UAE including Al Ain Zoo, Sharja’s Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife, and several more private collections in the country.
