Arabian oryx formerly occurred in the deserts of western Kuwait but have long been extinct there. JalAz-Zor National Park (330 km²) was established in 1990 and is fenced to limit incursions by poachers and livestock. Several captive oryx breeding herds are maintained in the country. A captive oryx from Kuwait contributed to the founding group of the World Herd in 1963.
