Arabian oryx were extirpated in Jordan in the 1930s due to several factors including hunting and trapping. Arabian oryx conservation efforts in Jordan started in 1978 when 11 oryx were released into Shaumari Reserve. Another reintroduction programme in southern Jordan’s Wadi Rum began in 2002.
