The 6th Meeting of the Coordination Committee for the Conservation of the Arabian Oryx (CCCAO)
Chaired by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), the Coordination Committee for the Conservation of the Arabian Oryx (CCCAO) held its 6th meeting in Abu Dhabi on 12 December 2018 to enhance regional coordination and discuss progress towards the conservation of the Arabian Oryx and its natural habitats. Senior representatives attended the meeting from range states including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan. During the meeting, challenges facing the conservation of the Arabian Oryx in the range states. This included the implementation of the regional strategy for the conservation of the Arabian Oryx beyond 2020 and ways to strengthen regional efforts and capacity for implementation. The meeting attenddes recommended the importance of establishing a legal framework in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the range states and the General Secretariat for the Conservation of the Arabian Oryx (GSCAO). It is hoped that the proposed MoU will facilitate the regional collaboration and overcome the many challenges that face Arabian Oryx conservation in the Arabian Peninsula. The meeting also saw the launch of the first ever Arabian Oryx Housing and Husbandry Guidelines, which compiles best practices in managing and breeding Arabian Oryx populations.
